Shannon is one of my students of Pinning Your Way to Success, I wanted to share her story here today so we can talk about something that people ask a lot when they want to start Pinterest affiliate marketing. One of the most common concerns people have is, “But what if all of my followers are my friends and family?” and then they usually follow up with another concern. “I don’t want to market/sell to my friends!”

I totally understand that! One of the things about the Pinning Your Way to Success system is that it’s designed to naturally grow your following, without all of the gimmicks and tricks that people sometimes promise will grow your following, like Pinning to group boards. The Pinning Your Way to Success system doesn’t focus on growth, because the growth that students see is a natural byproduct of the other lessons of the course. Shannon is a perfect example of how this works!

Hey Shannon! Introduce yourself!

I’m a very blessed stay-at-home entrepreneurial mom. Over the years, I have tried a number of home based businesses and have been with one of them for 24 years. I have an amazing husband and two terrific teenage boys!

I started off with 105 Pinterest followers, mostly friends and family.

Note from Christina: Shannon now has over 400 followers, which is growing, you can see that in her Pinterest profile by clicking the picture below!

How much money were you making from home before you started Pinning Your Way to Success?

Having worked from home for over 24 years, I was at one point making $10,000/year. but the past several years those numbers have declined to $100 here and there as well as my excitement for what I was doing. I felt burned out and in need of finding a new niche.

What were your goals before you started the course?

I wanted to be able to create a steady income stream that I could get up and running and then maintain with minimal input. Ideally, we are working on keeping our two boys in a private Christian school and my “Long Range” goal was to be able to foot that entire bill…$15,000+/year. My “Somewhere In-between” goal was to be able to help out with at least half the bill…$7500. My “Getting Started” goal was to add $100-$500 to our family budget each month.

What were some of your biggest fears and doubts? What kept you going through those?

Were these goals really doable? Was this a “for real” side hustle? Truly what has kept me going has been Christina’s constant help and encouragement via e-mail, the courses, and her facebook pages. On days when it didn’t/doesn’t seem like my pinterest business is going any where, I re-listen to one of the videos from the course and hear her inspiring words saying, “You Can Do This!” — “Work it even when it’s hard!” She’s very real and I love her live videos showing the balance of “Entrepreneurial Queen” to “Wait a second–let me open the grapes for my daughter REAL MOM!” It makes her very easy to relate to.

Tell us about how you got started!

Ironically, it began with a search on Pinterest late last winter into early spring. My husband and I have had a blog for the past six years and I was looking for ways to update it/monetize it. I was overwhelmed by the number of Pinterest posts stating what seemed to me to be like very unrealistic results…”Start your blog in 5 Minutes or Less”–yea right. (I’m still working on updating our blog!) “How I made $5000 my first month of Blogging.”–really? I also came across a lot of other “work from home/side hustle” money making ideas. Each one seemed to promise “get rich quick” schemes. I actually tried a few and after making less than a $1 on some of them, gave up.

Somewhere in all my scrolling, I came across Christina’s Pin “How to Make Substantial Income through Pinning on Pinterest.” I clicked on it and read the blog post. Hmmmmm…another one of those “too good to be true” gigs? Then she announced an upcoming free webinar. A few days later, I remember sitting in my chair listening thinking, “I could do this!”

My son, sitting across the room said, “Don’t do it mom…if it sounds too good to be true it probably is…just sayn’. ” However, this time, I just had that “feeling” it would be different–imagine…making money pinning on Pinterest? To me that would be a like having a hot fudge sundae with a cherry on top!

When did you really start to see results?

Again, my growth was slower than my encouragers (Brianna and Katie) and others but it was steady and I felt I had a bigger learning curve then the tech savvy young moms. June – $2.50; July – $5.50; August – $30.10; September – $45.25 and then October – $142.56! I still remember that feeling when I made $27+ –in one day!

We were heading to church and I showed my family my numbers…when we got out of church the numbers had grown by $6.00 in less than two hours. A viral pin! They were impressed!

Then I started sharing some of Brianna and other students’ numbers with them…the potential was definitely there. This month, November, I received my first “Shopstyle Payout: $225.45. And yes, while I have seen others grow at a much faster rate, I go back to the beginning…that first .05 click, that first sale and remember that this is “my race” and it’s definitely not a “get rich quick scheme” as Christina pointed out over and over again. But with consistent effort and pinning, you will see results!

What are you looking forward to most as your Pinterest business grows?

I look forward to learning more ways of monetizing my Pinterest account by spreading my wings and trying other affiliate programs. I’m really looking forward to when my efforts this year begin to show even more dividends next year and the years after that! I love the saying, “One year from now, you’ll be glad you started TODAY!”
